The research activity includes basic research, pre-clinical small animals laboratories and clinical research areas.

The Institute is part of the italian node of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures that provide open user access to a complete range of state-of-the-art imaging technologies in biological, molecular and medical imaging for life scientists in Europe and beyond.

The institute is characterized by many specific skills and activities of the institution is basically made up of the following research areas:

• ·         Design, synthesis, expression and characterization of molecules of biological interest, and their interaction with metal ions. Applications in diagnostics and therapy.
• ·          New diagnostic agents / teragnostici for Molecular Imaging: CEST agents and hyperpolarised, nanosystems, multimodal probes
• ·         Biochemical technologies aimed at imaging
• ·         Technologies of diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy.
• ·         Development and engineering of new technologies for imaging in health care, with primarily engaged in clinical diagnostic and intraoperative.
• ·         Preclinical and clinical molecular imaging.
• ·         Development of innovative technology solutions for e-health, with particular attention to issues of tele-medicine and procedures that assist in the interpretation of medical images (computer-aided detection and computer-aided diagnosis).

The IBB is well equipped in terms of chemical (synthesis and analytical characterisation), biological and imaging laboratories [Cell culture / Cell microscopy / Histology, Chemistry laboratory for synthesis and characterizazion of probes for the different imaging modalities, Image analysis, Animal house (µ)PET/SPECT, (µ)MRI/MRS (low & high field), Optical Imaging, µ-CT, µ-US, Hybrid modalities (CT/PET)]
