Validation of an automated regional brain segmentation method using a stereotactic Talairach approach
The goal of our study was to set up a method for automated measurement of regional brain volumes by applying the Talairach 3-D proportional grid to segmented brain MR images, and to compare the results with manual definition of regions. The method was tested in 5 normal brain studies and measurements were obtained for 5 substructures for each side (frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal lobes and cerebellar hemispheres). Automated regional measurement were significantly correlated with manual measurements. These results suggest that the method can be routinely used for regional definition cerebral lobes in segmented MR brain images.
