Alberto Cuocolo is full professor of
Diagnostic Imaging, director of the Nuclear Medicine Unit and director of the
Specialization School in Nuclear Medicine of the University Federico II,
Napoli, Italy. President
of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) from 2007 to 2008.From July 1987 to February
1990 he was Fogarty Visiting Fellow at the Department of Nuclear Medicine,
Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda,
Maryland, USA. From 1995 to 2001, he was associate researcher of the
Nuclear Medicine Center of the National Council of Research (CNR) and from 2002
to present he is associate researcher of the section of Diagnostic Imaging of
the Institute of Biostructures and Bioimages of the CNR.
He is author or co-author of
more than 300 scientific publications on peer reviewed international journals
indexed by Pub Med (with an impact factor of more than 1000). He is also author
of one book and of more than 50 chapters in national and international books.
Dr. Cuocolo has more than 6400 cited references in the international scientific
literature with a H-index of 38 (Google Scholar).He participated at many
national and international scientific meetings as invited speaker and chairman.
He was appointed as a member of the scientific and/or organizing committee of
several national and international meetings. In 2001, he served as Program
Director and General Secretary of the EANM Annual Congress.
He is member of national and
international scientific societies (Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine,
Italian Society of Radiology, Italian Society of Cardiology, Italian Group of
Nuclear Cardiology, European Society of Nuclear Medicine, Society of Nuclear
Medicine, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology). He was member of the
Executive Committee of the Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine from 1994 to
1996. From 2001 to 2003 he was the chairman of the Italian Group of Nuclear
Cardiology. From 1994 to 1997 he was national delegate of the European Union of
Medical Specialists (UEMS), specialist section of Nuclear Medicine, and of the
European Board of Nuclear Medicine (EBNM). From 1997 to 1999 he served as
general secretary and treasurer of the UEMS / EBNM and from 1999 to 2004 as
president of the UEMS / EBNM. From 2003 to 2006 he was the chairman of the
Educational and syllabus committee of the EBNM. From 2002 to 2005 he was
chairman of the Cardiovascular Committee of the EANM and co-chairman of the
European Council of Nuclear Cardiology (ECNC). He is also appointed as a member
of the International Advisory Council and of the International Council of the
American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
Among his international
honors there are the Jean Debiesse Award in 1996, the Marie Curie Award in
1997, the Marie Curie Lecture in 2002, the EANM Annual Congress Highlights
Lecture in 2005, the AINM Annual Congress Highlights Lecture in 2011, the
Croatian Society of Nuclear Medicine Award in 2011 for his outstanding
achievements in the field of nuclear medicine. He was honorary editor of the
European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging from 2005 to 2008.
He is also member of the European Science Foundation since 2006.
He is associate editor of the
Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, consulting editor of Clinical and Translational
Imaging, section editor of Current
Cardiovascular Imaging Reports, and member of the editorial board of several
scientific international journals, such as Journal of Nuclear Medicine,
European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Quarterly Journal

He served the National
Committee to develop guidelines for radionuclide imaging procedures in
cardiology, which were published in the Italian Heart Journal in 1999, the
European Commission of the Royal College of Radiologists (London) to develop
guidelines “Making the Best Use of a Department of Clinical Radiology”
(2000-03) and the EANM/European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Committee to
develop procedural guidelines for myocardial perfusion imaging in nuclear
cardiology, which were published in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine
and Molecular Imaging in 2005. He has been nominated by the
Italian Ministry of Health expert for the evaluation of the Continual Medical
Education activity (since 2001) and by the Italian Ministry of the University
and Research reviewer of the scientific projects of national interest (since
2002) and expert of the National Committee for the evaluation of research
activities (since 2004). He served as reviewer of international projects for
the Wellcome Trust, London, UK, the French National Institute of Health and
Medical Research (Inserm), the Catalan Agency for Health Technology Assessment
and Research, the European Science Foundation (ESF).
He was involved as Principal
Investigator in the following clinical trials: Empire Study (coronary artery
disease) from 1994 to 1998; Christmas Study (Phase IV, heart failure) from 1999
to 2000; and King Study (Phase IV, coronary artery disease) from 2001 to 2002. In
the 2010 he attended a GCP training course organized by Lux Bioscences.
